Oh what a time we live in. One good thing that has come out of this era is the ability to talk more openly about mental health. Traditionally a bit of a taboo topic, Iā€™m excited to share an app that can aid in deciphering your own mental health. May is mental health awareness month, so I wanted to present an option that is not only budget friendly, but might keep your mental health top of mind.

I wanted to introduce you to an app called Bloom! It was founded by people who suffered from things like anxiety and depression, and found solutions that worked for them with a desire to share. They came up with a mindfulness and meditation app we know today as Bloom. I know that both mindfullness and mediation are buzz words that are used frequently, but practicing both just might change your life. Though the app isnā€™t an actual therapist, it can walk you through exercises and thought provoking questions that a doctor might ask. It can also help you understand yourself more!

APP OVERVIEW

Okay so here is what using Bloom looks like. When creating your account you take a little quiz, basically sharing things you want to focus on like ā€œbetter sleepā€ or ā€œstress reliefā€. It then builds a little profile and pushes you things that you might benefit from like a ā€œmorning intentionā€ reminder or an exercise to help you unwind from the day. You can also browse by different categories like ā€œpersonal growthā€, ā€motivate yourselfā€, ā€œbuild healthy relationshipsā€ and more if you need a little something different that day. Regardless, each day you should complete the ā€œdaily bloomā€. I like to do this at night after my day is over, but you can do it in the morning as well! You answer how you feel (super awesome, pretty good, okay, somewhat bad, really terrible). After that you describe your mood (with emojis!) and answer why you feel relaxed. Basically the app helps you unpack your feelings and help you understand yourself. This can allow you to start making changes to better help your mental health!

MY THOUGHTS

I think everyone could use some help unpacking their feelings and the app is great for that! My favorite part is the ā€œstatsā€ tab. Iā€™m a data girl! You can see an overview of how you felt, but you can also go back and click on a specific day to see the details about the feelings you left.

The biggest epiphany for me was how much I allow my work to dictate whether my day has been successful. When I lost my job last summer, I realized how much of my self worth was tied to being employed and this discovery is just another layer in that deeply rooted value. It is an issue that my days are only good if I ā€œget a lot doneā€ or achieve success, whatever that means. So many times Iā€™m asked if I had a good day and my response is something like ā€œwell Iā€™m behindā€ or something along those lines. Thereā€™s so much more to consider and Bloom as helped me realize this and begin to positively shift my mind.

I also really like that the app encourages you to unpack your feelings. WHY are you mad? You might consider it to be one thing, but after some soul searching you may realize that it is triggered by something else.

My least favorite part of Bloom is really a personal problem. I would forget to use it! It does take a little time to create the habit, but once you do it is definitely worth it! Note that you can enable notifications to remind you to do your bloom.

While you could journal these things yourself, I really enjoy the fact that everything is guided. It is kind of like using a personal trainer instead of working out yourself. Youā€™re more likely to participate to the fullest when someone is guiding and reminding you!
