I have had ā€œdiscuss fall transition wardrobeā€ on my list to do for at least a month now. With the move and everything, it just didnā€™t get shot. I typically try to schedule out what Iā€™m going to write about, but again with big life changes around here, I have had to put some posts on hold. We were on a breaaaaak. Anyway, I really wanted to shoot this blazer when we were apple picking this weekend, but since we decided to stay in the city due to the fires, I decided to wear it anyway, and just make it summery by pairing it with a white t-shirt and denim shorts. I donā€™t know how I went from ā€œI donā€™t do blazer anymoreā€ to ā€œIā€™M NEVER TAKING THEM OFFā€, but here I am.

Everlane Oversized Double-Breasted Blazer (c/o) | Everlane Air Oversized Crew Tee (c/o) | Agolde Denim Shorts | Cariuma Sneakers (c/o) | Senreve Maestra Bag (Use code ELLEMULENOS for $50 off any purchase over of $300 or more.) | Aerie Sunglasses | Honey and Vinegar Liquid Lipstick in Malibu (get it for 25% off w/code ELLE25)

I didnā€™t intentionally shoot this for the blog, but thought it would be PERFECT to discuss fall transition wardrobes. It also helps prove my point that just because something might be purchased to wear to work, doesnā€™t mean it has to stay at the office. I mean how much more could you stretch your closet if you thought about wearing things multiple ways? I know that is always my point, but just trying to drive it home!

A blazer that is good quality will run you at least over $100. This is a general statement, but most of the time is true. Donā€™t get me started on cost of goods and how factory workers are treated. Most recently I talked about this on instagram, but you can find posts on my blog here. Luckily I donā€™t have to worry about that with this blazer, as it is made by Everlane. Read their brand story here. Anyway, my point on mentioning price is to say that I know a good blazer isnā€™t cheap, but if you wear it more to just work, the cost per wear will go down. Also, blazers are pretty classic, so youā€™ll probably be able to wear it for quite a bit of time! The only reason I stopped wearing them is because most of mine were cropped weird or super small. All about this oversized trend right now! Though I do prefer to size down in them. (Wearing a 2 here)

Back to my main point todayā€¦ dressing for fall when it may not feel like it. Basically the story of LAā€™s life. Texas too, but it will start to feel that way come January. Hah! I realize this outfit isnā€™t something youā€™d actually wear to the workplace, but since the blazer is, I wanted to go ahead and share it, in honor of it being Women in the Workplace Wednesday. I will for sure shoot it again with more of a fall vibe. Donā€™t worry! All that to say, here are some tips to dressing for the season, even though it my not feel like it. This was a blog post request - Iā€™m so glad you asked, because I thought I had shared something like this before, but I couldnā€™t find it anywhere. Here goes!

  1. Colors. The easiest way to look what the weather is supposed to feel like is to dress in the colors of the season. For autumn, reach for oranges and deep reds, as a sure fire way to feel like fall. You donā€™t have to be wearing a chunky burgundy sweater to feel like fall - donā€™t sweat it and reach for the maroon t-shirt!

  2. Textures. Iā€™m a big fan of letting fabrics tell the seasonal story. Suedes and knits look like fall, but are definitely warm. Try looser knit sweaters or suede mini skirts, as they are more breathable than their counter parts of warm sweaters and corduroy pants.

  3. Layers. Texture is definitely are a grey area, as it oftens bleed into layering. Grab a blanket scarf or a leather jacket. These look the part and can easily come off if you warm up. Theyā€™s actually what I had to do with this blazer, as LA get sunny and warm mid-day.

  4. 50/50. Dress for 50% for the season and 50% for the weather. A perfect example of this is my current outfit. Iā€™m fall because of my blazer, but summer because of my shorts. If you need an idea for the office, try a lighter, more breathable top and a seasonal bottom. And if it cools off or heats up, you can always take it back to #3 and remove a layer! Another one of my favorite ways to do this is wear a t-shirt and shorts with a cardigan. Works similarly for a denim pencil skirt or nice jeans for casual Friday at work.

  5. Footwear. I think shoes are my favorite because they can truly change a look. Try wearing a sleeveless dress or even shorts with some form of boot. Textures come into play on footwear too! Velvet and suede are really in, so there are a lot of options in that area as well.

Do you have any tips? Let me know! I basically live in the land of endless summer now, so I need all the help I can get!

P.S. I shot this at the Urban Lights installation outside of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. A must see / visit!
