Happy first day of winter! Seems fitting that we welcome winter just a few days before Christmas. Have yā€™all ever had a white Christmas? We donā€™t usually get them in Dallas; however, when we were in Seattle last holiday season, it snowed big timeā€¦like our rental car was stuck and everything! Dallas is supposed to be low 60s and high 50s, so bring out your shorts, people! Texas is crazy with weather, which is why I have to really be on top of my skin and figure out what it needs.

Wow. During my fall skincare update A LOT had changed. I talked about how I broke up with coconut oil and how I cut sugar from my diet for about 6 weeks to try and clear my skin. Not a ton has changed since my autumn update, but enough did to want to share it with ya! SIDE NOTE: if you are new here, everything skincare and makeup that I share is cruelty-free and on the nontoxic spectrum. If something isnā€™t, I call it out, but I usually donā€™t share/use those items.

One thing I have been struggling with the past week and a half is break outs on the sides of my mouth. When I removed coconut oil from my skincare and makeup, I didnā€™t really worry about my lipstick because I donā€™t wear it that oftenā€¦well fast forward to event season and Iā€™m wearing lipstick several times a week. Iā€™m currently on the hunt for a new natural lipstick that doesnā€™t have coconut oil in it. I am hoping to try Ilia lipsticks soon and maybe Honey and Vinegar Texas mad lipsticks! Iā€™ve literally been spot treating and sleeping in my One Love Organics Charcoal Mask on the sides of my face, looking like a charcoal version of Ronald McDonald, red hair and all!

The tips I gave in my fall post pretty much roll over into winter (like my exfoliation and mask tips), but hereā€™s some winter specific info to make sure that your skin is up to snuff with the season.

  • humidify. Iā€™ve been sleeping with a humidifier by my bed for over 2 years now. I also put some essential oils in them, so Iā€™m breathing those in too! I just use this cheapo one, but Iā€™m looking into getting a nicer one since I use it so often.

  • cool it. Itā€™s super tempting, but donā€™t take really hot baths and showers. It dries out your already dry skin! Try using warm showers and end with a cold flash. Itā€™s good for your skin! This also helps things like eczema NOT thrive. I thought I was going to be able to have my first Christmas in 2 years without eczema, but it has flared up. At least itā€™s not the itchy pus kind (graphic I know). Itā€™s just really red and hurts with a slight itch. I did a whole blog post on remedies here.

  • lock in. Get a product with hyaluronic acid. In the least scientific description possible, it basically retains moisture and holds it against your skin for maximum hydration, a long with a tonnnn of other benefits. I started using Osea Malibu Hyaluronic Sea Serum this summer and it is truly transforming. Itā€™s the most expensive product I use but 100% worth it in my opinion. Before it my skin felt tight and dry. It is Osea Malibuā€™s best kept secret for sure! I just wish it was available in a bigger bottle. Sad note, I spilled about a quarter of it on the floor the other day and was so sad!! Seriously one of my favorite products.

p.s. if you are masking, donā€™t use a clay mask. I learned this the hard way last winter! Itā€™s more drying and better for warmer weather.

Okay so here is my specific routine currently. Let me know if you have any questions on it! This is the happiest I have been with my routine in a while.

MORNING:

  1. Cleanse: One Love Organics Vitamin B Enzyme Cleanser

  2. Tone: Primally Pure Everything Spray (get 10% off w/code ELLEMULENOS)

  3. Serum: Juice Beauty Antioxidant Serum (I jade roll this into my skin)

  4. Moisturizer: Ursa Major Golden Hour Recovery Cream

  5. Sunscreen: Biossance SQUALANE + Mineral SPF 45 (to be honest I havenā€™t worn this a ton, just because Iā€™m trying to soak up as much vitamin D as possible!)

NIGHT:

  1. Cleanse #1: One Love Organics Vitamin B Enzyme Cleanser

  2. Cleanse #2: One Love Organics Easy Does it Foaming Cleanser

  3. **Exfoliate or Mask. (I exfoliate probably 3 nights a week with either my charcoal sponge or Brand New Day. If Iā€™m masking, I will tone before and after. I tone before with Thayerā€™s Rose Petal Witch Hazel. My current favorite masks are One Love Organics Charcoal Mask and Herbivore Botanicals Brighten Mask.

  4. Tone: Primally Pure Everything Spray (get 10% off w/code ELLEMULENOS)

  5. Serum: Osea Malibu Hyaluronic Sea Serum (This SAVES my skin from being dry and tight)

  6. Moisturizer: Ursa Major Golden Hour Recovery Cream (I switched up this order and now I do my moisturizer before my oil!)

  7. Oil: Biossance 100% Squalane Oil (I use my gua sha to rub this in)

Thank you so much for following my skincare journey this year. Itā€™s been so humbling but Iā€™m super glad I could connect with a lot of yā€™all on this subject. Acne is crazy and you are not alone! I hope even just 1 of my tips helped you and made you feel better. I donā€™t know if yā€™all remember, but the word I gave to 2018 was beauty. I may not have completed all my goals, but I know I really followed that intention to a T. Looking forward to sharing my 2019 goals and thoughts with you next week! Until then, enjoy the holidays and donā€™t get too crazy;)

P.S. Iā€™m trying to get Nick to commit to a routine instead of no routine (lol) Hoping to share this in the new year too!
