When I moved from Dallas, TX to Los Angeles, CA I knew the weather was different. I mean hello! That was one of the benefits of moving. We are currently in the middle of summer and today the high is 73 F. Talk about DREAMY. My high school self would never believe me as she was doing summer field practice in 100 F + heat. What I didn’t really process is how cooler weather might be harsh on my skin. I figured the cooler weather would be better than the hot and sweaty weather I often experienced… especially since my last corporate job was in a hot warehouse without AC. Yes, California is a cooler state (weather-wise ;) ILY TX), but it is also a dryer state. (They go hand in hand because cooler air holds less moisture #science) I knew this because of fire season and all, but again I didn’t really think about how that could or would affect my skin. While a fire can (and does) occur ANYtime, fire season is specifically May through October and can wreak havoc on skin.

Keep reading to learn the benefits of using a humidifier and what how the Homech Quiet Ultrasonic Humidifier has worked for me!

Early June I started noticing that my nose (around my nostrils) was dry and peeling and my lips were so cracked they constantly hurt. I also started consistently waking up with nose bleeds. When I couldn’t remedy any of those things with my normal salines, moisturizers or balms, I texted my SIL who has lived in LA for 5+ years. I asked her if what I was experiencing was normal here or just a fluke. She reminded me it was in fact fire season and suggested that I buy a humidifier. She has this humidifier, but I decided to research for myself and ended up purchasing this one. Hers is cool because you can actually put VICKS in it if you want, but I really liked the size and the style of the Homech Humidifier I found. It has almost 6000 reviews and a 4.8 rating, so you KNOW it is good.

Now I’m going to tell you about my experience with the Homech Quiet Ultrasonic Humidifier. I’ll give you a pretty, bulleted list in a second, but basically I saw improvements in my skin within a couple of days of using the humidifier. My nose bleeds stopped and the peeling skin around my nostrils disappeared almost instantly. My lips have still been dry here and there, but nowhere near the pain or flakiness that I experienced before the humidifier. Another benefit I didn’t really expect is that I think it has helped my acne. Dry skin only further irritates pimples, so I think I’m finally getting some soothing it has needed for a long time. I’ve been using this humidifier for almost 2 months now and it is definitely one of my essentials.

When purchasing a humidifier, I wanted to make sure to get one big enough to where it could run all night. My humidifier has a 4L / 1.06 tank and runs through the night even if I have the moisture levels turned all the way up. That’s right - it has a knob you can turn for minimum - maximum humidity. Typically mine is somewhere between medium - maximum. It says it has a 60 hour run time, but because I run mine on the higher end I’d say it runs less than 18 hours. For example if I leave it on for 9 hours overnight and turn it off when I wake up, it will not make it through another 9 hours the following night. This doesn’t bother me at all though, as I don’t mind filling it up daily. We have a water filter on our coffee cart and I just use that since it is already room temperature. The other thing I wanted to make sure I found was a pretty humidifier - LOL. I knew I wasn’t going to buy the Dyson humidifier, but didn’t want to stare at an eyesore all day. I went with a clean white look as that fits our aesthetic, but ours also comes in black and grey if that is more your style.

All that to say, I’m pretty pro-humidifier and am surprised that I haven’t heard people discuss them and their benefits before. I typically only hear them in regard to babies or for when people are sick. For all you list people, here are some benefits of using a humidifier and some things to think about when purchasing.

BENEFITS OF USING A HUMIDIFIER

  • Hydrates skin. Goodbye cracked lips and sore noses. Hey hey, it might help your acne as well. Dry skin worsens acne and its complications. When your skin is dry it starts producing more oil to try and help, which usually ends up creating more breakouts as overproduction of oil can clog pores. Don’t skimp on your moisturizer or on your humidifier!

  • Soothes throats. Can also aid coughs and prevent the flu! Studies have shown that humidity levels 40% and above help deactivate flu particles which makes them infectious.

  • Lessens Snoring. Dryer climates make me more stuffy, which increases snoring. If a humidifier is on, it can help you breathe easier, resulting in reduced snoring! Oh and no nose bleeds ;)

  • Relieves Headache. Hello! They help sinus pressure / help you breathe better.

  • Helps Plants. A lot of people like using humidifiers for their plants as it creates a tropical type environment where they can THRIVE.

THINGS TO REMEMBER WHEN BUYING /USING A HUMIDIFIER

  • Too much moisture can be bad. It can create mildew and dust-mites, among other things. I only run mine at night, so it isn’t something I’m doing all the time. If i’m having a cracked lip issue I may run it during the day, but that isn’t my normal. The Mayo Clinic says optimal humidity should be between 30% - 50%. Anything above that can lead to mold an other unsightly things. I can check my home’s humidity via my Dyson app.

  • Don’t forget to clean your humidifier. It may be annoying but you should do this at least once a month if you are running it constantly. If you don’t you will be breathing in all of the things you aren’t cleaning out…

  • Buy the correct kind for you. I went for the ultrasonic humidifier for a lot of reasons, one of them being that it won’t burn anyone. Steam humidifiers are an option, but that can be dangerous. I also wanted a cool version versus a warm / hot air one.

  • Don’t use essential oils in them. Just don’t. Get a diffuser that is made for that! Using EO’s in your humidifier might be tempting but it will decrease the product’s lifespan.

  • Consider your hair. This isn’t something I have to really deal with, but it is worth thinking about! My SIL has wavy hair and using her humidifier makes her hair frizzy. If humidity turns you into a poof ball, a humidifier will do something similar. It is literally creating humidity in your home! It may still be a worthy appliance in your home, just wanted to point that out.

  • Use filtered water. This will help your humidifier last longer. If you use unfiltered water, the hard mineral and such can make your product stop working. Also try to use room temperature water. Do not use ice water or hot water as that can break down the product too.

  • Good luck finding an area for it. It can’t sit on the ground, but also has to be a certain amount away from the wall. Also be careful of the surface, as it might damage wood. I also made sure I liked the physical appearance of mine, as I figured it would be sitting out more often than not. I’m not saying it isn’t possible to find a good spot for it, but it was kind of challenging for me. I put it on my nightstand as the closer it is, the more you can reap the benefits. If it far away from you, you won’t get maximum benefits.

  • Consider what you will be using it for. I wanted to make sure to get a large tank so it would last overnight! There are some really pretty humidifiers but they are often smaller and don’t have a large tank. It was important for mine to last while I was sleeping. If you don’t need this, a smaller model would be easier to find an area for / display.

Do you have a humidifier? Any benefits I missed? I love my humidifier and would recommend it!! I recently got an Evapolar mini ac unit and it also has a humidifier in it. Moisture all around please!! Side note if you want to try Evapolar, you can use discount code ELLEMULENOS for 15% off now through September 21, 2020. I hope you find a good humidifier and soak in all of the benefits!!
