You’re never fully dressed without your smile, people! Your smile is something everyone notices and is one of the easiest things to upkeep. By the way, have you taken advantage of your dental insurance? You should be going to the dentist twice a year. Do it!! Anyway, if you don’t have insurance or you aren’t going as often as you should, anddd even if you are, the best thing you can do for yourself is make sure to get a good brushing. BUT are you even getting a good tooth brushing? To be honest, before Quip I wasn’t.
Quip Toothbrush | Outdoor Voices Cloudknit Top (c/o) | Tom’s of Maine Fluoride-Free Toothpaste | Hello Activated Charcoal Floss
Until about 3 months ago, I had never used an electric toothbrush. Nick had been using one for a while, but I had never experienced it. I just used the toothbrushes that I was given at the dentist and called it a day. I mean I always brushed my teeth twice a day, if not three times, but never had self-moving bristles and let’s be real…never for the magic 2 minutes that you are supposed to. Same with flossing! I mean I do it enough, but I don’t do it every day. Nick on the other hand is pretty much the king of flossing. He is so good at it.
Now before you go and give Nick all the dental hygiene credit, I just want to say that he is the reason I bought the Quip toothbrushes for us in the first place. I thiiiink he has had the same electric toothbrush head since before we got married. That’s over 3 years AND GROSS. He always put the cap on it, which was really gross looking, not to mention that one of our cats liked to chew on the head when Nick wasn’t looking. I had had enough - after all… I kiss that mouth, so it’s actually part mine.
Anyway, I had been eyeing Quip on and off, but had heard about it once more on The Skimm and was like, “yeah, Nick and I are getting new toothbrushes.” HOW ADULT. To be honest, he was actually really excited when they came in. Again, how adult. Hah! Like I mentioned, we have been using them for almost 3 months now, so I feel good about telling you the ins and outs of this toothbrush! I’m going to review the Quip toothbrush on 3 areas: price, design, and usage. I’m going to give my opinion, but also pepper in where Nick and I had different opinions. It is important to note that he is a longstanding electric toothbrush user, whereas I have never had one. Let’s get started! Read below and/or I made a YouTube video. Enjoy!
PRICE
-$25 up to $50 for toothbrush alone
Plastic - These are the versions we got. I got blue and Nick got green. They are $25. Kind of sad the kids version has more color options in plastic, but not a huge deal.
Metal/Plastic - These are really pretty and I wish the plastic versions had prettier colors, but I didn’t really see the benefit in buying the metal version for $15 more. ($40)
Set - You can buy a plastic set for $30 or a plastic/metal set for $55. It comes with the brush, toothpaste, and floss. We just bought the toothbrush alone.
Charity - Quip has 2 charity editions. Right now one is all black, benefits the Global Dentist Relief Foundation, and costs $50. They also have a red/white one that benefits (product)red, and is $40. I couldn’t find anywhere how much money is donated, but these are both reputable organizations!
$5 up to $15 every 3 months for refills
Head - This is the basic plan and what we did! Every 3 months Quip ships you a new brush head, which includes a new battery. It’s $5 every 3 months regardless of if you purchased plastic or the metal/plastic combo.
Floss - Nick prefers flossers and I use activated charcoal floss. It’s $5 every 3 months for a refill, but the metal floss container does cost more ($15), whereas the plastic version is only $5. Obviously that is only the upfront container fee and it is refillable, but again, I didn’t think the metal version was worth $10 extra.
Toothpaste - We use Tom’s of Maine Fluoride-Free Toothpaste and are really happy with it, plus it is cheaper. Quip’s toothpaste is $5 every 3 months.
DESIGN
You can tell Quip really thought about their toothbrush design! They pretty much covered everything.
Mirror Hanger - The toothbrush comes with a holder that has a remove-able strip, so it can be pressed onto your mirror! The bottom of the holder is flat, so you can actually just stand it up, if you prefer.
Travel Case - The holder actually doubles as a lid for the brush, perfect for travel.
Timer - The brush buzzes for a full 2 minutes, which is the recommended amount of brush time. I for sure never brushed my teeth for 2 minutes, so I know I’m getting a cleaner smile now.
Delivery - I love that it is a subscription, so I don’t have to worry about remembering to go to the store, change the battery, etc. I was never one to replace my toothbrush every 3 months anyway, so it’s a nice change. Hah!
USAGE:
Not only does it have good design, but it actually works!
Dentist Worthy - The toothbrush honestly feels like I just had my teeth cleaned at the dentist’s office. So good!
Timer - I already mentioned the 2 minute timer, but it also buzzes every 30 seconds so you can focus on a new/different area in your mouth, for maximum clean.
Sanitary - I love the fact that I don’t even have to think about replacing the head. Also, I can keep the brush high, away from the cats, and let it air dry, versus stifling moisture.
Covered - Your toothbrush is under warrantee for the lifespan of your refill plan!
CONS:
Because nothing is perfect ;) These are not dealbreakers at all, just wanted to share our thoughts.
My only con is regarding the button that turns it on. I don’t know if it is my pre-arthritic thumbs or what, but sometimes the button is hard to push / turn on. I also wish the base level came in more colors, but it is in fact the base level. I would have preferred the green, but let Nick have it, so we didn’t get our brushes mixed up!
Nick’s only con was regarding the head size. He wishes it was a little bit longer, but that is really just in comparison to his old toothbrush.
One more thing is that the head is plastic. I’ve always used a plastic brush, but I have heard that it’s not the best material to put in your mouth. I would have been more inclined to buy the metal brush if the head was metal as well, not plastic. Not sure if a metal head would possibly hurt teeth though? Just thinking out loud. The only alternative I have heard people mention is bamboo - not sure how they would make a bamboo electric head, but who knows!
Overall, we really like the Quip Electric Toothbrushes and would recommend them. We bought them off their website, but I believe you can get them at places like Target and Amazon, but I would recommend their site so you can take advantage of their subscription program and other specials they run.
