I don’t know if you have ever ordered a hat online, but I have never had a good experience. Granted, said hats typically have been under $50, so I don’t know that the company(s) cared to make sure they were packaged well; buuut, they have always arrived bent or misshapen, or lacking shape completely. Price doesn’t always indicate quality, but in this case, I think it does. My perception of ordering hats online changed when I purchased my Gigi Pip Monroe Rancher Hat. I had heard about Gigi Pip a year or so ago from various instagram posts and ads, but I kind of forgot about them. I was talking to my Dallas hairdresser this past summer and she mentioned that they had the best hats. I knew I wanted a good hat come fall, so I began looking into getting one. When I was finally ready to pull the trigger, the black Monroe rancher hat was sold out, so I had to wait to come back in stock.

So let’s back up to the ordering process. If you see one you like, for sure look into getting it soon, because though they do restock, they often sell out. Gigi Pip is a woman run business and the hats are handmade in Utah! Keep this in mind when you see the price, as not only are the made in the USA, but they go through a 66 step creation process. Don’t worry too much about the price though, as the most expensive hat will run you $112 and even then, they only recently raised the price on them. I don’t want to get too ahead of myself, but its a great quality hat and honestly, I would pay more for one and they are 100% worth it.
Back to how to order… you need to know your head size, as most hats are sized by letter or number, not OSFA. They have a Hat Sizing 101 page, but basically just put a tape measure around your head. My head is on the bigger side and is 23”. I wasn’t sure if I should get the 59” M/L (for 23.22” head) or the 61 XL (for 23.62” head), but ended up getting the 61 XL to be safe. My hairdresser has a big head too and she told me she got the biggest size, because it has this great inner band with velcro where you can tighten or loosen the fit! This is a great feature for girls with curly hair who sometimes needs more head room. I’m happy with the size I got, but if I didn’t, the return process seems like it would be pretty easy if you do it in less than 30 days!
If you are worried about the fit, they actually sell hat sizing tape that you can put inside the band. You can also buy a removable leather band to put on the outside of the hat, which can also give a tighter fit and look cute! I originally misunderstood and didn’t realize there was a a velcro ribbon on the inside, so I bought this snap on leather band, which 1) did not easily fit on my XL hat and 2) was silly of me to buy, as the hat comes with an inner band to tighten and the added a black leather band literally does nothing for my already black hat. If I did it again, I probably wouldn’t get a leather band, but if I did, I’d get the chain leather band, since it can fit well on any size hat. I’d also probably grab it in a different color than my hat, so it pops / serves an aesthetic purpose. Do not get the snap on if you grab the XL hat.
SIDE NOTE / UPDATE - as of summer 2020 they actually have an XL snap leather band that will fit perfectly :)
You probably predicted that I was going to say the shipping of the hat is fantastic. It arrived in mint condition and I could not be happier with the product! It is 100% worth the money and I can’t recommend them more. They’d make for a great Christmas gift! I love my rancher hat and do want more, but I also really like the Wes Flat Brim Fedora, the Miller Pinched Crown Fedora, the Scottie Wide Brim Hat, and their super cute new beanies! To be honest, I was worried I wouldn’t like how the Rancher looks on my head, but I L O V E it and can’t wait to buy another one.
Side note - Per Gigi Pip, the Monroe style tends to run a little big. I have the same size in the Monroe and the Miller and can’t really tell a difference. I could probably wear one size down in both, but it doesn’t really bother me since I can adjust the size via the inner band. If your head is big like mine, I probably wouldn’t worry and order the same size! Everyone is different. If you have any questions the GP customer service team is great and can assist you when you need it!
As of 2022, they added a blemished section which is basically the hats they put on sale / one of a kind / might have small tarnishes. Grab those discounts!!
P.S. Here is a YouTube video of my review as well. I’m able so show the inner band well and talk more about the brand. Enjoy!
