The one you’ve all been waiting for! I’ve been teasing a “my favorite collagen” post for what feels like a year. Like most things for me this spring, the post regarding collagen that I actually saw results from got postponed thanks to a horrible bout of morning sickness thanks to my twinnies. I’m better now since I’m on meds, though writing has become hard thanks to my need for mid-day naps! Earlier this year I did a deep dive into collagen… what is collagen, how and why to take it, benefits, what to look for in a collagen supplement, plus an intensive look at different brands. You can read that blog post here as it is a prerequisite for this one!
After I wrote the ”Which Collagen is Best for You and Why Take it” blog post, I realized that I needed to be more intentional about my collage intake and picked from the list I had already researched. My previous theory was to get it from the foods I was eating. I love bone broth, but I wasn’t drinking it daily and wanted to really help my skin out. From late 2019 - late 2020 I struggled with a horrible case of adult acne. It was likely due to Ulcerative Colitis and a hormonal imbalance that I kept thinking I could “balance myself”. I had scarring from that; but, I also realized I’m not getting any younger / I turn 30 this year, so that kind of pushed me to start supplementing.
Ultimately I bought Glotrition to give it a try and after going through a month’s supply, I turned around and subscribed. Keep reading to find out why!
WHY GLOTRITION?
I know, I know. It is on the more expensive side of the collage supplements. I’m never for just going with the more expensive option and assuming the price tag means it is the best / worth it. On the flip side, you often get what you pay for, so I didn’t want to just look for the cheapest option either. If it doesn’t work well, I don’t want to pay for it, no matter how cheap / expensive it is! I was skeptical regarding Glotrition, but after seeing someone like Courtney Kerr rave about it for so long (her skin looks fantastic), I decided to at least give it a try.
Regarding ingredients, Glotrition checked all the boxes for me and then some. Before even trying a collagen, you should see what is actually in it. Glotrition uses Bioactive Collage Peptides which are buzz words to look for when considering a collagen supplement. Bio-active means you are reaping ALL the benefits, not just a portion and peptides means that you are getting more than one strain, which is beneficial to your body. Glotrition uses Verisol collagen which is probably the most respected blend of collagen on the market. If you want to get really nerdy, it is a mixture of Type I and Type III.
On top of all the collagen goodness, Glotrition also includes Biotin (great for hair and nail growth / can convert amino acids into new cells), Hyaluronic Acid (skin buzzword - helps keep your skin moisturized while combatting wrinkles and brittleness), and Antioxidants (a blend of blueberry, tart cherry, and cranberry, which is good for anti-aging as it fights against free radical damage.)
If you want to know a little more about the nutrients, for one daily packet, it has 25 calories, 4g carbs, 2g sugars (it contains Stevia), 2g protein, 12mg vitamin c, 300mcg Biotin, 2500mg collagen, 522mg antioxidant blend.
WHAT DOES GLOTRITION TASTE LIKE?
Ah the taste question! I would say it tastes like a light berry flavored collagen water. It isn’t overly fruity nor does it lean in one fruit’s direction. While it does in fact taste like I’m drinking collagen (even the “flavorless” collagen powders out there taste like collagen to me), I will say it is the best tasting collagen powder I’ve ever tried. That being said… I don’t “crave” the flavor as I’ve heard people say. I am probably among the 1% of people who actually love regular water. I’m drinking water ALL the time and I crave that over say a flavored or even a carbonated water. I don’t personally need a reason to drink water or to drink more of it, because I’m typically consuming enough. Additionally, my pallet is more of a citrus / bright flavor profile regarding beverages. While I don’t think Glotrition is too sweet by any means, it is more on the sweet side of things, which I typically don’t gravitate to as much. All that to say, it does not taste bad and like I mentioned, it is the best tasting collagen supplement out there.
HOW TO TAKE GLOTRITION PACKETS
When I subscribed, I got the cute little water bottle, so I just fill that baby up (20 oz) and pour the little packet in. I don’t typically go that sweet in the morning (again, it’s not too sweet - I’m just more of a citrus person, especially in the morning), so I usually drink it after lunch / mid-afternoon.
Glotrition comes in this easy-to-use, already portioned off little packet so it is perfect to throw in your purse and great for travel. You can dump in a smoothie, or even just stir it into yogurt. Up to you!
DID YOU ACTUALLY SEE RESULTS FROM GLOTRITION?
The short answer is YES. I took it daily for a month and then paused simply because of my morning sickness. I barely ate /drank anything that following month and if I did, it often times just came right back up. I didn’t want to waste my money, nor did I feel like consuming collagen whatsoever. A couple weeks off from taking it and I was like where is my pregnancy glow?! Why is my skin so dull, especially compared to last month (I took weekly photos of my progress). Then it dawned on me. I had stopped taking Glotrition! As soon as I felt up for it again, I began taking it and haven’t looked back. I could truly see the difference in my face and skin. I started taking Glotrition in January / February, stopped for the month of March, and have been taking it religiously since April. Easiest way to impact my skin and glow from within!!
Skin was my main focus and reason for taking collagen, but I saw results in my nails / think that Glotrition made them stronger. I really didn’t see any different regarding my hair, but that wasn’t an area I was looking for results.
Scroll through these to see just how bad my acne and scarring has been.
See above for images while taking collagen. The first is from 02/18 when I had been taking collagen for several weeks. The second is from 03/25 when I had been off of collagen for several weeks. You can barely see the breakouts as they weren’t as visible to the eye, but they were angry bumps all over my chin. They hurt and took a while to heal. The last photo is from 06/04 when I had been back on collagen for a couple months.
I can’t do much (no chemical peels, no salicylic acid) while pregnant, but my doctor did okay this collagen supplement for me. It is one of the “I feel pretty” things I can do right now. I totally understand if this is out of your budget. I personally make room for it in my budget, because I never want to go back to the year + of skin issues I had. No, not saying this will prevent acne or breakouts, but it is nourishing for my skin and a small investment I can make. I was in physical and mental pain during my struggle with acne, so I’m very willing to “treat myself” in this area.
Whenever I researched collagen, I told my mom she needed to start taking it too because of a study I learned about. She takes calcium supplements and I read that by combining collagen with calcium, it benefitted those with osteoporosis, which she has. No, it didn’t help them gain back bone density, but those who took both calcium and collagen didn’t see their bone density worsen! Glotrition was out of her budget, so she took Olly gummies for a while. She liked the results she saw (she pretty quickly found that it helped with hair loss), but 1) a bottle of Olly collagen will only get you through two weeks and 2) she wanted something with lower sugar. She switched to Physician’s Choice pills and has really been liking those.
My point is to find what works for you and go from there! The best collagen is the one that fits in your budget and that you actually use!! Try supplementing with it. You won’t regret it! My number one choice is Glotrition, but I shared tons of different collagen options and vegan friendly alternatives here. Do you have a favorite collage or supplement? Let me know!
P.S. Glotrition has other products in their beauty line. Be sure to check out their serums and beauty booster drops too!
