My birthday was early last month. I told my husband I didn’t care what we did or anything like that, but I did have one request… I wanted to do a wine and potato chip pairing. I mean what’s not to love? I love good wine and potato chips are one of my greatest weaknesses. I ended up posting the wine and chip pairing on the blog and it had great success. Not only was it super fun for me, but you loved it too! Because that one did so well, I decided to share some other pairings. I mean we are all indoors right now whether we are sheltering in place or trying to avoid smoke / smog, so might as well do something fun and unique. If we are past quarantine / coronavirus and you are reading this, AWESOME. It is still fun to do and a great idea for a get-together with close friends regardless if coronavirus is lurking.

Who doesn’t love a movie night? I’m not saying anything is wrong with your basic popcorn and chocolate, but if you want to upgrade it, a movie night candy and wine pairing is a great idea! We did this with the same friends we did the chip pairing with and it was so fun. It’s also a great conversation starter if you’re with people you don’t know as well, as you get to know their taste and get to actually talk before you watch the movie. When I do these pairings, I write them so you have a guide, but feel free to criss-cross pairings and see what else you might like. Be sure to share one-off pairings with the groups, so they can see if they like it too!
The night we did this, we used traditional movie theater candy and watched Notting Hill because Nick had never seen it! It would have been fun to do late 90’s early 2000’s popular candy since that movie came out in 1999. (baby bottle pops, wonderballs, etc!) This would be a great bonus to do if you want to go the extra mile with the them. Watching a classic / older movie? Use candy from that era! With Halloween coming up, you could do spooky / traditional Halloween candy too. The options are honestly endless!
Okay let’s sip to it! Here are the pairings we did and what we enjoyed the most. You’ll notice that this pairing isn’t as specific as my chip pairing. One reason is that we didn’t really plan ahead on this one - we grabbed candy and wine we had on hand and figured out the pairing as we went. Another reason this isn’t as “dialed in” if you will, is because there were a lot more options to pair than the chips where we only had 4. Honestly you can’t go wrong - make it enjoyable! You may find out you don’t like certain pairings the hard way, but that is also the fun part. Hah!
Movie Night Candy and Wine Pairing:
Sauvignon Blanc - sour gummy worm, popcorn, green sour patch kid
Tempranillo - crunch bar (or any milk chocolate) , twizzlers
Beaujolais - red sour patch kid, dark chocolate, popcorn
Rioja - dark chocolate caramel , gummy worm or bear (not sour), once the wine opens up, it is good with a twizzler
Other Pairing Ideas:
Cabernet Sauvignon - york peppermint patties, junior mints, dark chocolate
Pinot Noir - reese’s peanut butter cups, milk chocolate caramel (twix, snickers, milky way)
Rosé - fruity candy (gummy bears, gummy worms, skittles, starbursts, swedish fish)
Chardonnay - popcorn, milk duds
Pinot Gris - Milk chocolate (M&M’s), cherry candy (jolly rancher, skittles, starburst)
I hope you enjoyed this as much as I did! I have a wine and french fry pairing on my to-do list, so be on the lookout for that! I also want to branch out into different drinks like margarita pairings, but cocktail pairings are a little bit more work. I feel like wine pairings are easier since you just pop a bottle! Beer is on my list too, though I don’t drink a ton of it. The ones I do tend to drink often more craft / limited runs. Maybe I could do a cider pairing since fall is rapidly approaching?! So many fun ideas!! Stay tuned and let me know if you have a request. Cheers!
