Dry shampoo is a lot of our hair’s best friend…or should I say it is our best friend and our hair’s enemy? I say that partially because do you know what is actually in your dry shampoo? Most of them have butane (hello lighter fluid) along with other harsh chemicals and fragrances. I wrote a post about cleaner dry shampoos less than 5 years ago and even those aren’t great. Back then I wasn’t really on the powdered dry shampoo train as I thought they would be really messy. This is a product that is supposed to make my life easier, not create powdery residue on my hair and in my bathroom. Another issue I ran into was due to the color of my hair. There are “normal” dry shampoos and then there are blonde or brunette dry shampoos. I have lighter red hair and was so confused if blonde or brown would be better for me. Primally Pure Dark Locks Dry Shampoo (get 10% off with discount code ELLEMULENOS)
ANYWAY, all that changed when I started using Primally Pure’s dry shampoo. Not to cut to the chase, but you can try it for 10% off with discount code ELLEMULENOS. I love all the other PP products I have tried, so I’m not sure why I waited so long to try the dry shampoo. I think maybe I just needed to see it in person as they have a “lighter locks” and a “darker locks” version. Back in February I got to go to their HQ in Murrieta and they actually keep the dry shampoo (along with other products) in the bathroom! I instantly picked it up to have a gander and decided I should go with the darker locks version and that was that!
Fast forward to end of July and I have been using PP’s dry shampoo for over 4 months! PP actually notes that it typically lasts 6 months to a year. Depending on how often you use it this will vary, but I have most of the bottle left and am only nearing the 6 month mark. I’m really happy with it and would recommend it.

Here are some tips, tricks, and just general information regarding Primally Pure’s Dry Shampoo.
What is the price? 1 oz for $16 or 2 oz for $28
Let’s compare! Using the 2 oz bottle it comes out to $14 an oz. DryBar’s largest size comes out to about $7 an oz, Evo’s comes out to about $7 an oz, R+Co comes out to, about $5 an oz, and Oribe’s comes out to $8 an oz. I understand that that makes Primally Pure’s the most expensive BUT you are paying for quality ingredients. Additionally, I have found that non-aerosol products last me so much longer than aerosol spray cans, so it actually costs you less in the long run. I have been using a spritzing hairspray for almost 3 years now and it lasts me LOADS longer than any aerosol can ever did. I pretty only buy one bottle a year. With aerosol sprays, we kind of get trigger happy and probably spray more than we need to, thus running through the product faster. You need a lot less PP dry shampoo powder than a spray and can accurately control the amount because you have exact control over the powder and its placement. Again, PP says this bottle will last you 6 months to a year and mine will probably last me over a year!
What are the ingredients? The brunette version has Cocoa Powder, Kaolin Clay, Arrowroot Powder, Baking Soda, Essential Oils of Grapefruit, Lavender and Peppermint.
The blonde version is pretty much the same, but has more Arrowroot Powder and less Cocoa Powder.
What does it smell like? Fresh! There is somewhat of a cocoa undertone for the brunette one, but it isn’t weird or overpowering. Note that they both have essential oils of grapefruit, lavender, and peppermint! I know that the scent is something that a lot of my friends love about their dry shampoo, but girl breakup with that toxic smell!! I promise your life will go on.
Which color should I get? I tried to share an image of the brunette version in the palm of my hand - it is a light brown hue. I was initially scared to get the brunette version because a lot of the brunette versions on the market are very dark and that is just not my hair. Really only blondes / dirty blondes need the blond and everyone else get the one for darker locks. Easy as that!
How should I use it? Primally Pure suggests that you put it in your hair at night, tussle it around, and sleep on it; however, I’ve never done that as I use dry shampoo as an “oh shoot I need to wash my hair and don’t have time.” I lightly shake the bottle a couple of times over my part, then use my teasing brush to move it around and help it absorb oil. You can also use your fingers or a makeup brush!
This is the teasing brush I use which you can get on Amazon.
I typically only put this in my hair when it is struggling, as my newly washed hair typically lasts a shorter period of time if I go right in with the dry shampoo. You can however use it on fresh hair to create more volume, etc. Do what is best for you and your hair!
Pro Tip: The shaker lid is that of a salt shaker, but it twists to close and then has a lid to cover it. Be sure to twist the top closed before putting the lid on, otherwise a lot of powder will come out. Even if you do forget, don’t worry! The lid will keep it in. I forgot to twist it closed one time, but it didn’t explode in my bag or anything thanks to the lid! I was always worried about using powdered dry shampoos because if I didn’t spill it all over me, I figured it would spill all in my purse. The trusty lid has your back and this won’t happen thanks to Primally Pure’s packaging. They actually fairly recently re-designed the packaging for this very reason!
All in all I also want to remind you that powdered dry shampoo is not the same as spray dry shampoo. Aerosol can dry shampoo is like magic in a bottle - I can’t deny that! Buuuut I also can’t deny all the crazy chemicals and such that is found in those and can’t knowingly use such things on my body anymore. Primally Pure wrote an article on those ingredients here and I even touched on them in this blog post.
Overall I DO recommend Primally Pure Dry Shampoo if you are in the market for a clean alternative that actually works! Like I mentioned above, I was able to visit PP HQ right before quarantine and that’s how I was able to initially try the dry shampoo. I can’t wait to go back and try more things, especially their spa. I want to get the gua sha facial from Courtney SO BADLY. Until then I’ll be using my Primally Pure Plumping mask and calling it a day. I really want to try the new Soothing Mask (WITH CBD!), so that is probably next on my list, though you can’t go wrong with any of their products!
Don’t forget, you can use discount code ELLEMULENOS for 10% off your Primally Pure purchase. Enjoy!
