The past several months I decided to update my look and experiment with different makeup for summer - both brands and styles. Several products and dollar signs later I came to the realization that I like my minimalistic, fresh faced look and don’t want to change that. Foundations are too heavy for my liking and I enjoy seeing my freckles. Any time I put on extra eye makeup or try to do “glam”, I feel like I’m playing in someone else’s makeup bag where I don’t belong. That being said, I learned I can keep to my style and still update it each season with the swipe of a tint lighter or a shade darker of blush, rather than keeping it the same year-round. Lips are such an easy change too.

Does a skincare routine end with sunscreen or does the makeup routine begin with sunscreen? That is the question. Either way, after I complete my skincare routine (you can read my summer skincare routine here), I put on sunscreen. I use Babo Botanicals SPF 30 on a daily basis and Pipette SPF 50 if I going to the beach or somewhere in direct sunlight without a hat. I let that dry then pick up my beauty products.
Before I get into that, I wanted to say that the below products work for me and my skin type which is fairly “normal” though if I had to lean one way, I am more oily and breakout prone than dry. I do sleep with my humidifier every night. Even before that though, I wasn’t really on the dry spectrum. As always, I try to use nontoxic / clean makeup as well as cruelty free. If my products are rated on EWG, I try to only use a 2 rating or less. I also try to use products without coconut oil which is sometimes hard to do in the “natural spectrum. All that to say, here we go! Let’s dive into the products Ib use.
MY SUMMER MAKEUP ROUTINE
Vapour Essential Daily Primer. I put this on after sunscreen, before my makeup.
Hynt Beauty Duet Concealer in DC01 Fair. I dab this in the corners of my eyes, the edge of my eyes, and on any blemishes.
Jane Iredale PurePressed Base Mineral Foundation in Bisque. This wears like a pressed powder.**
**I also like Ilia Radiant Translucent Powder SPF 20 in Magic Sands but they are discontinuing it. Maybe I’ll try their Soft Focus Finishing powder at some point? I also like their Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40 in Rendezvous ST1. If I wear their serum I always go over it with a loose powder unless I’m going to the beach, on a hike, or something outdoorsy.
Jouer Cosmetics Bloom, Bronze & Glow Bronzer & Highlighter Duo in Sunrise. I put this straight on my skin, though sometimes I put it on a makeup brush. I roll it on my forehead, mid-cheek, either side of my nose and jawline.
NYX Professional Makeup Tinted Brow Mascara in Chocolate. This wears so easily! I put it on my brows backwards (pushing the hair towards me nose), then one more coat as I push the hairs back into their place. I also like NYX Brow Gel for a more dramatic look like a special event.
Jouer Cosmetics Blush & Bloom Cheek + Lip Duo in Uplift Me. I places this similarly to the bronzer - mostly straight to my skin, but occasionally via brush. I put it on the height of my cheek bones and a little on my nose. I like the color on the other end (Amuse Me) for nighttime / fall.
Jouer Cosmetics Bloom, Bronze & Glow Bronzer & Highlighter Duo in Rose Quartz. This is the opposite end of the bronzer I used earlier. I place it directly on my skin by my eye and make a sideways “v” to my cheekbones / under my eye.
FitGlow Beauty Conceal + in C1. This is a little brighter than my other concealer. I put it on in my eye crease, then the outer eye as well. I dot it, then dab with my finger just like the other concealer.
Jane Iredale PurePressed Eyeshadow Palette in Naturally Glam. In this case, I put the color “feather” across my entire eye, then used “tulle” on the edge.
Alima Pure Loose Mineral Eyeshadow in Paris and Leone. This gives a bit of texture, to my eyeshadow and I like the subtle shimmer. I put the leone on the lighter parts and the paris on the darker parts.
Milk Makeup Eyelash Curler. This one works / I’m not married to it. It was important to me to buy from a cruelty-free brand and this was one of the only ones I could find.
Jane Iredale PureLash Lash Extender and Conditioner. I love this! I’ve been using it since I stopped getting lash extensions several years ago. Use it wet / don’t let it dry before you put your mascara on top of it.
Thrive Causemetics Liquid Lash Extensions Mascara in Brynn. I’d love to try it in Crystal (Brown/Black) instead of Rich Black. This does not flake for me and comes off like a dream / does not give raccoon eyes.
Jouer Cosmetics Powder Highlighter in Skinny Dip. The prettiest subtle shimmer glow. I put it on my cheeks and nose. I’ve also used the color Citrine and like that too!
Primally Pure Rose + Mint Tinted Lip Balm. I like this lip balm because it has a slight color and hydrates your lips. There’s nothing worse than putting on a lip stick that dries out your already dry lips.
Jouer Cosmetics Bare Rose Lip Kit. This comes with a Bare Rose Lip Liner and Shine Balm. The lip liner is not drying and the lip is a light kiss of color that is a perfect pinky nude. I also have a Shine Balm in Peony that I like for daytime wear. I also like Honey and Vinegar Liquid Lipstick but I don’t think she makes them anymore - looking for another option that I haven’t found yet. I also like Ilia Colorblock lipstick in Rosette but still looking for a color to replace this nude - perhaps Amberlight would work? I need a bit more pink than brown for my coloring which is kind of hard to find.
Have any ride or die makeup you think I should try or colors that would work well for a “warm spring”? Let me know! Especially if you found a good piny neutral lipstick for me. See you in a couple of months for my fall skincare update. Perhaps we will do a makeup update then too! Here’s a video for you if you’d rather see the items in action. Enjoy!
