As we approach mid-September, I know it is still rather arm in a lot of areas, but that doesn’t mean you can’t dress for the approaching new season. I recently asked if you had any blog post requests for the upcoming quarter and I received a couple asks for fall transition style. I actually posted about Fall Transition Wardrobe Tips last October, but figured it was worth discussing again.

I thought that these photos from our recent trip to Ojai would be perfect to discuss dressing for the season even when it doesn’t feel like it. You may not be able to tell from the images, but the day we took these was one of the hottest days in Ojai EVER. Well it was one of the hottest days in all of California in general! But still. Can you tell that it is around 114 from these pics? I think not. To be fair, I did wear a cotton romper that was breathable ;)

ALSO, before I get into tips for tricking your current clothes into fall submission, I want to talk about where I shot these photos in Ojai. Bart’s Books is an outdoor bookstore that has been around since 1964. It is such a dreamy little bookstore and I highly recommend it. They have both new and old (and collector books) alike. I loved seeing all the Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, and Bobbsey Twins books in the “childrens” section. I also had my eye on a vintage Prada book in their collector area. The cutest part (if thats even possible, because honestly, the whole thing is darling) is that the kitchen area of the house stores all the cookbooks. I MEAN SO CUTE. I’m not saying to go to Ojai with your main goal to visit Bart’s Books, but I’m not saying not to… If you do decide to visit the Ojai Valley, find my Ojai Travel Recommendations here.

Okay now to the actual tips for dressing for fall when it still feels like summer!

When I brought up this topic last year, I touched on:

  • colors

  • textures

  • layers

  • the 50/50 rule

  • footwear

To read more about those, you can re-visit that post here.Today I’m going to touch on two things: fiber content and accessories. Honestly I’m surprised I didn’t go into detail on those two categories last time; however, I guess that just proves that there is always room for improvement.

TWO WAYS TO TAKE YOUR CLOSET FROM SUMMER TO FALL:

  1. Use your accessories to your advantage. Take this outfit for example. My romper is decidedly summer, but it has a few things going for it that allow it to be easily worn into fall. It has short sleeves versus being a tank top and it is black, so it doesn’t truly scream summer. When I paired this hat with it, it was more like “goodbye summer and hello fall”, don’t you agree?! This also kind of falls into my previous tips of use of color and texture, along with shoe choice, but hey! I guess they kind of all work together. Hats are a great way to switch up an outfit, especially for a new season. This also works for purses, earrings, and even jackets, if you’d consider that somewhat of an accessory.

  2. Asses your fiber content. Something that isn’t talked about much is that natural (not man-made) fibers are more breathable. I discussed this whenever I wrote about what to look for when purchasing pajamas, but I wanted to bring it up again. Cotton is a great fiber content for summer and fall when it is still warm, but don’t forget about wool and cashmere. Sure it keeps you warm, but it also allows your body to still breathe! It doesn’t have to be an itchy, thick item. Go for thinner layers to assist with breathability and lean on layering when you need to! I mentioned that my romper was cotton because it helped me stay cool on a sweltering day, but didn’t take away from my fall-like look.

What do you think? Have any tips I need to try out? As a little bonus to this // to hopefully inspire you with your closet, here’s how I would take my look up a notch for more fall weather. I’d grab a duster cardigan and put on some taller boots. This would still very much look like fall, but offer my protection from cooler elements on my arms and legs.

Happy dressing!! I’m having more and more fun diving into my own closet and re-styling things I already love or even forgot about. Good luck and enjoy some pumpkin treat for me! Maybe once we move into an air conditioned unit in a couple weeks, I’ll finally be ready for a PSL.
