As a reminder, I am not a doctor. Do your own research and be your own advocate, but always talk to your doctor and make decisions together.

Be nice… Take your vitamins… You know, things your mom used to tell you! I grew up taking Flintstone’s Vitamins like the rest of us and then graduated to other various products on the vitamin aisle. I never really thought anything of them or if they were even good for me to take. I mentioned it in this post that last year (2018) I accidentally stopped taking my vitamins. I just ran out and never ordered more.

Because I’m on this journey to live cleaner and better, whether that is my makeup or the products I clean my home with, it’s only natural that this desire has bled into other areas of my life. The more you know, the more you want to know and after that you just can’t go back! I wasn’t going to talk about this yet (and I promise I’ll go into more detail later, but just not yet) , but I just can’t be silent anymore. I took hormonal birth control (HBC) for almost 10 years. Among other things, HBC depletes your nutrients, so not only do you need to take a multivitamin to get today’s nutrients, you also have to try and make up for all of the nutrients that have been depleted. Depleted nutrients are a huge deal because they can and will affect your ability to function and how your body works. I’ve mentioned her quite a bit, but I took Dr. Jolene Brighten’s Post Birth Control Syndrome Course last November and it opened my eyes in so many ways.

I knew I needed to get back on a vitamin, but more than that, I needed to start taking a vitamin that actually did something for my body. Check your vitamin label. What does it have in it? What does it NOT have in it? A great example of something you don’t want is folic acid. A lot of people think that is the same as folate, but it is 100% not the same. Folic acid is a synthetic rendering of folate. A lot of women can’t even process it and on top of that, it can have harmful side affects. This is crazy to me because I recall taking a HBC that advertised that it added folic acid for women’s health! What in the world?! Like I mentioned, do your research, talk to your doctor and make a decision on what is best for your body!

I started taking Ritual Vitamins back in December of 2018 and first told y’all about them in January of 2019. I wanted to get back on a vitamin of course, but more than that, I knew I wanted to get off HBC, as I couldn’t forget what I had just learned from Dr. B. For that reason I chose to take (and still take) Ritual’s Prenatal Vitamin. (They have their normal women’s vitamin too if that’s what you need!) I take a prenatal to try and build back up what I have lost since I began taking HBC at the age of 18. Before getting off the pill (I didn’t quit cold turkey), I took Ritual Prenatal Vitamins for almost 2 months, to try and make my transition off HBC a little easier. Anddd I’ve been taking them ever since! When you order Ritual, you are basically signing up for a subscription. They ship to your house automatically so you never run out, but you can of course cancel anytime. I didn’t really like that I had to essentially agree to get them every month vs ordering them on my own, but fast forward to 6 months later and I’m super thankful that they auto-ship, as it is one less thing I have to think about! I actually have my Ora Organic supplements and my charcoal deodorant on subscription too by choice now!

At $30 (regular vitamins) to $35 (prenatal vitamins) a month, I get that it isn’t suuuuper budget friendly; however, why waste money on an $8 bottle that contains a 3 month supply if it really isn’t getting my body what it needs? My health is my priority, so it is an investment I’m willing to make. Additionally, when I was researching good vitamin brands, Ritual was actually on the lower end of pricing. I found that most were $38-$60 a month! Ritual is vegan, non-gmo, gluten-free and doesn’t use any dyes or synthetic fillers . I also really like that they tell you where they source all of their ingredients! So in addition to my health being worth it, I think their product is worth the price too!

If you’re currently on any form of HBC and want to research it for yourself! A great resource is Dr. Jolene’s website. This article is a great starting point. I also love Nicole Jardim, who I first heard from during Dr. Brighten’s PBCS Course.

Again, I’m not a doctor. Just sharing things I didn’t know and thought y’all should be informed too! Do you take a vitamin? A prenatal? What do you take?

UPDATE: Ritual launched MENS vitamins!! You can check them out here.
