Living in California has made COVID-19 somewhat easier in the sense that we can get out of the house, head somewhere beautiful and still social distance. We have been able to slip off to secluded beaches, take a deserted hike, or even a scenic drive, all within an hour or two (or less!!) of our apartment. Iβve felt cooped up in the last month, but for the most part have been A-OK. Nick on the other hand is an extreme extrovert and has kind of been going stir-crazy.

We live in West Los Angeles, so we have been on the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH / Highway 1) more times than we can count; however, we have never driven it, while driving in a convertible. When Memorial Day Weekend was approaching, I decided to remedy that. Nick loves cars, so while I originally planned to surprise him, I let him in on the idea and he picked out a car for us to drive for the day. We have used Turo in the past and had a good experience, so we decided to use them again for our little day date. It was honestly such a fun day! (first mentioned this idea to you on my fun date ideas post) We rented a 2020 BWM Z4 convertible.

While I love Malibu, we drive there all the time. For MDW we decided to drive to San Pedro and go through all the beach towns - Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach! We started with breakfast burritos from The Chori Man. They make all of their chorizo in house. So far we have tried 3 of them, but they have several different kinds. If you donβt eat meat, they have a bean burrito and a βsoyrizoβ offering too! It is located in San Pedro and we have already been back since our Memorial Day trip. SO GOOD. We grabbed our to-go burrito and found a spot along the water at Wilderβs Addition Park to eat them. This is right by the Korean Friendship Bell if you want to check out that landmark.

We did a lot of driving this day (obviously), so I wonβt bore you with every stop; however, one of the places we drove past that I canβt wait to visit once it reopens is Terranea Resort. As soon as we are out of this pandemic, I at least want to go get a drink at their bar! Near there is Wayfarers Chapel, also known as The Glass Church. It is STUNNING. It was designed by Lloyd Wright, Frank Lloyd Wrightβs son and is definitely worth a drive-by at the very least.
We rented the car for the entire day (picked it up at 8 am and dropped it off around 7 pm, though we bought it for 7 am - 9 pm.) After driving through all of the beach towns, we stopped by our apartment to eat lunch, take a nap, and let Dino out. After re-fueling, we hopped back in the car and drove around the Hollywood Hills! We honestly would have stayed out longer, but were confined by our mileage limits. Some cars on Turo have the option to pre-purchase additional miles, but ours didnβt. If you go over, you get charged something like $1 a mile over or something crazy! Otherwise we would have 100% driven all the way to Laguna Beach ;)
Even if you donβt have somewhere scenic to drive or a specific destination in mind, it might be fun for your s/o or bestie to go on a fun drive. It doesnβt even have to be the whole day!! It can just be a couple hours if you want. Turo lets you filter for whatever you are looking for. You donβt have to get a sports car either. They seriously have so many options!! Just be sure to double check any extra insurance the owner might put on there - we came across some that needed like a $3000 refundable deposit. No thank you! Also check to see where the carβs pickup will be. We did keyless entry in Downtown LA, which wasnβt ideal, but is what worked best. You can also make the drop off at the airport too.
With everything going on in the world, a day trip might be all you can muster this summer, but that doesnβt mean it has to be boring or predictable! Enjoy your summer and hopefully youβll get to go on a nice drive soon. Stay safe!! Oh and please send me reasons why we shouldnβt trade my car in for a convertible. It was so nice to have. Hah!
Just a side note - while I have shared a gifted experience of Turo before (here), this experience was neither gifted nor sponsored. We really like using Turo, paid for it with our own money, and were not paid to say this.
