Growing up I thought slippers were dumb. No joke! Like I remember receiving them as gifts and thinking cool, Iām never gonna wear these, THANKS! Granted, I pretty much had carpet everywhere then, so back then it was kind of like what is the point of wearing them? I live in Texas where 10 months out of the year, my feet are fine. Hah!
Thereās been a shift from carpet to more wood / tile flooring, which is another topic for another day, but still worth mentioning now. Since I graduated college and got my own apartment, I havenāt had carpeting anywhere. Circa 2014, I bought myself a pair of nice slippers and havenāt looked back since. I purchased the Ugg Scuffetes and LOVED THEM. I like they they are hard on the bottom, but are fluffy and warm. Iāve literally had the same pair for over 5 years now and though they are older and a little matted, they still work well. Since moving to LA, I have been trying to wear street shows around the house less and wear my slippers more than just Saturday mornings. Hah! The problem? My feet have been warmer. Ironically even though LA is cooler most of the year, my feetsies wanted to breath! I immediately understood why those sandal-like slippers were popular and went on to find my own.
The first pair fo criss-cross slippers I find were by Sorel. I have their snow boots and love them! Their Hadley Slides are so cute! I was ready to click āpurchaseā and saw that they were faux fur and started second guessing my decision. Usually faux fur shoes wonāt last as long and I was looking to have this pair for a while. I needed them to be durable too, if I was going to be wearing them on the regular! I found a pair at Nordstrom, but it was also faux fur. Ugg does make a pair, but I didnāt think they were that attractive looking. Finally I stumbled upon Emu Australia and found a pair that actually looked cute and was only $15 more than the faux fur pair I originally liked. Plus they were shearling!
Why did I want shearling? Shearling keeps your feet warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It is made of sheepskin, which is wool! Emu Australia uses Australian Sheepskin that is approved with the Woolmark Sheepskin seal. Why is this worth noting? It represents 100% pure wool that hasnāt been blended with other fibers. When wool hasnāt been combined with other textiles, it is infinitely recyclable. Pure wool can be shredded, felted, and even spun into new cloth. Keep these kinds of things in mind when purchasing, as though it does use an animal product, it is actually more eco-friendly than most faux fur.
Emu Australia Mayberry Slippers in ānaturalā is what I ended up buying and I love them! I wanted to write a post about them, because I couldnāt find any personal reviews other than the product reviews, and wasnāt sure about sizing and whatnot, so hereās my opinion:
PRICE: Considering I paid more like $80 for my Ugg slippers, these felt like a good deal at $59. I also signed up for their newsletter to get 10% off! I wear these every single day and they still doing swimmingly. I have seen faux fur versions fall apart by now and they were only $25is cheaper, so that also made me feel like they were worth their price. I would probably have paid more for them - around $80 - so I consider it a great deal!
SIZING: Iām a size 8.5. They do not have half sizes in the Mayberry slippers, so I was conflicted on what to buy. I wear an 8 in Ugg boots, but most of the reviews stated that these criss-cross slippers ran narrow. I ended up getting a 9 and am happy with that size. The house shoes may feel snug at first, but they do stretch out a bit, so keep that in mind. They do in fact run narrow. My right foot is a little bit bigger than my left foot, but 3ish month later, they both fit the same and everything is groovy. (When I first bought them, the right foot was a little tighter under the criss-cross.) SO I would say size up if you are a half size, though Iām not sure you should size up in other Emu Australia products, because I only own these slippers.
STYLE: This is more on the trendy side, but criss-cross slippers have always existed. I went with ānaturalā because i figured those would stay in-style even longer, not that I care ;) They also come in 11 colors, so thereās literally a hue for everyone.
QUALITY: This kind of echoes the price section, because I think they are great quality for what I paid. The shearling keeps my feet my bodyās temperature and has good construction. I plan on wearing these for another 5 years, if not longer. They hold up!
HOT TIP: Donāt wear your slippers outside. I know it is tempting if they have hard soles, but just donāt! Unless of course these slippers are like your dog walking shoes or something! Keeping them as literal house shoes is great, because it will keep your home more clean and free of germs.
Overall, I would recommend these slippers and think they are a great buy! Do you have a favorite house shoe? Let me know! My three biggest takeaways for this post are:
Size up for half sizes or wide feet
Keep in my mind they stretch, so note that before you decide return them for being too small
Consider materials that are eco-friendly - they will more often than note last longer and be more sustainable
Note that I shot this look at our AirBnB in Malibu last month - I donāt own an Hermes blanket, but I wish I did ;)
