I think a post along these lines has been in draft form for YEARS now. At the time I was waiting because I wanted to reallllly do the video justice. I should have just done it then, because I waited too long to do it and now my hair is short. Hah! Donā€™t worry, I plan to grow it out a little bit and will share allll the ways to curl different lengths of hair.

Before I jump into how I do it, I first want to talk about my hair type. I have thick, straight hair. It will sometimes ā€œwaveā€ and it holds curls well, but I would say my hair is kind of an anomaly. It may not look like I have a lot of hair, but I do and that helps volume. Another thing is, that my hair is ā€œnormalā€ in the sense that it doesnā€™t get greasy quickly, but isnā€™t dry and brittle. I usually was it around 2 times a week give or take and I try to let it air dry if I can help it. My hair holds braids better dirty, but teases the best when it is clean! It has to be 100% dry though, or it will fall. Regarding curl, it holds either way - just be sure to use the right curling iron. Even though my hair is straight, I typically curl it to get ready, as it feels more finished to me. Always the opposite of what you have, right? Hah!

So I finallllly videoed myself getting ready - watch it below! Iā€™ve always received a lot of questions about how I get volume, so that is my favorite part of this videoā€¦ the teasing portion! Before watching it, I just have these 3 takeaways for you:

1) Know your hair. This video is really just for inspiration. Hair is so different from person to person, so if yours does better with dirty hair or something like that, do you! It doesnā€™t hurt to try something new, but donā€™t waste too much time if it just isnā€™t working.

2) Add volume before curling. This is the order I do it, but thereā€™s a method to my madness. I donā€™t really brush out my curls or pull them apart, so if I were to tease after, it would do just that andddd my curls wouldnā€™t really last.

3) Curl away from your face. I feel like this is a normal thing, but I didnā€™t know it when I first started curling my hair in high school, so just wanted to say it again! It helps them look more natural. So, yes! The curls will be facing opposite directions, as they will both be away from your face!

PRODUCTS

Teasing Brush: Mine is Spornette. Iā€™ve had 3 of these brushes over the past 10 years and they are great. It doesnā€™t matter what brand you get, I would just recommend using one that has 3 rows of bristles, not 2. Thatā€™s the biggest difference for me! This one is a different brand that would also be a good choice.

Curling Iron: I use a 1ā€ curling iron. This is a conair curling iron and it works just fine! I need to get a new one, because I dropped it and broke that part that props it up on the counter. I like conair and you can find it really anywhere! The one thing Iā€™d recommend is to get one that is ceramic! The curls last longer.

Hairspray: I have been using Carina Organics hairspray for almost 2 years now! It isnā€™t aerosol, so it lasts a lot longer, and is nontoxic! I also use their shampoo and conditioner. They are from Canada, so shipping is annoying, but I buy the bigger bottles and they last a long time, specifically regarding the hairspray one. Iā€™d buy a regular size and then order the big refill bottle. It will last you so long!

**Below are not shown in video but are still relevant!

Heat Protectant Spray: I use Yarok Feed Your Ends Leave in Conditioner after I wash my hair. I put it on the ends of my hair, while still wet, before I blow dry.

Hair Mask: About once a month Iā€™ll use Rahua Omega 9 Mask. It is so luxurious and leaves my hair so soft!

Scalp Massager: I love using this when I shampoo! It helps my hair feel clean, and stimulates blood flow.

I donā€™t currently use a texturizing spray, but am considering one for better holdā€¦Iā€™m looking at this sea salt spray, this lift spray, and this voluminous spray.

Any short hair tips and tricks I missed? Itā€™s been over 15 years since Iā€™ve had hair this short, so new to me!!
