Ready for the extension of the ever popular romper and jumpsuit? Today we are talking about coveralls! Of course these are not new, but have started trending again in the last year or two. A ā€œtrickle-upā€ trend by Levi's in the late 1890ā€™s, coveralls were once reserved for those who worked as mechanics or as other manual labor positions. Now they are worn by women everywhere. Hah! What I mean by ā€œtrickle-upā€ is that they didnā€™t originate from high fashion / haute couture houses. Like jeans, coveralls were intended for hard labor. Isnā€™t it interesting what becomes a trend and what it stems from? I always love learning / sharing these details!

Keep reading / viewing / scrolling to see how you can style your coveralls and own the trend!

Iā€™m not going to lie. I honestly wasnā€™t sure I could pull off coveralls. First of all, I have a longer torso compared to my legs and much like rompers, I didnā€™t know if it would fit my body well. Beyond that, I wasnā€™t sure if I would look like a poser in them. Once I tried them on though, my mind changed! They really arenā€™t that much different than a jumpsuit and they can be styled so many ways. Whatā€™s not to love? Here are some ideas to get your closet inspired.

Side note - I featured the coveralls on the blog a couple weeks ago! I just wore it plain with my Veja sneakers. See the styling here.

First up is the most casual of the 3 looks and one that pays homage to the coveralls origination. I layered a white sports bra under it so I could un-button it a fair amount. I tied a bandana around a belt-loop much like a mechanic would a rag. To finish, I slipped on plain white sneakers to tie back to the sports bra and the bandana. An easy and practical coverall look! Youā€™ll note that I rolled the leg of my pants for this look and the one below.

Second up we have more of an edgy vibe. I love my Dr. Martens and thought theyā€™d pair perfectly along with my belt bag. To top it all off, I added my felt rancher hat. All kind of basic adds since they are all black, but they make major statements. It may seem ā€œfancierā€ than the first look and while it is, it is just as comfortable. I can walk for miles in Docs and the belt bag keeps me hands free.

Side note - you can get $50 off my belt bag with discount code ELLEMULENOS and free shipping with my hat with discount code ELLEMULENOS as well.

Last but not least, I dressed up my coveralls with some heels! Iā€™ve seen others wear pointy pumps and roll the cuffs and thought it was cute. While I didnā€™t roll the cuffs in this particular setting, I think it still comes across with the same girly vibe! I used handbag to tie it all together, since it incorporates both the tan and the black.

Okay so which is your favorite?! I think #2 or #3 is mine, but I also like the practicality of it with fashion sneakers. I know that coveralls are trending right now for aesthetic reasons, but I have a feeling that they will start to come back for practical reasons! Due to COVID-19, I know several people who have started investing in them because they cover their entire body (long sleeve versions) and are easy to layer over other clothing for safety precautions. After all, coveralls were originally made to use as protective clothing in work settings. They have truly come full circle.

P.S. I guess I forgot to talk about cons regarding coveralls? The only one i can think of is the same as rompersā€¦ you have to undress completely to use the restroom. Hah!
