You asked for more home content, so here you go!! Over Black Friday I purchased new sheets for me and Nick and they were WELL overdue. When Nick and I first got married and moved in together (2016), I purchased all Parachute Home bedding and sheets. I did somewhat care about organic bedding then, but not the extent I do now. I really bought Parachute, because I had trouble finding nicer California King sheets. We have a California King mattress, which is longer than a regular King, but a little smaller in width. Nick is 6’3”, so we opted for more length, so his legs don’t easily hang off the bed ;)
When we moved from Dallas to Los Angeles, we got rid of our old guest room furniture. It was partially so we didn’t have to transport it all the way to California, but also so we could upgrade it. It was my furniture from when I lived alone, plus the bed was only full and we wanted to have a queen in our guest room. Upon arriving in LA, we moved all of our grey sateen Parachute bedding and sheets into the guest room with plans to buy new bedding for our master.
I logged onto Parachute and was kind of taken aback by the price. I’m not sure if it really changed that much since I last purchased or if I had just seen more dollar signs lately and was more cautious due to the expenses of moving. We did move for Nick’s job, but they didn’t pay for relocation. Regarding Parachute, we previously purchased their sateen duvet set and the price actually hasn’t changed - I double checked! I think it was just sticker shock for me because this time we opted for a quilt instead of a duvet, and the quilt is almost $100 more than the duvet. You also don’t save any money buying the duvet set and the sheets versus separately. All that to say, because of how much we had just spent on moving, I bought a cheaper set of organic sheets and man have I noticed the difference. Not only are they pretty dingy after little over a year of use, but they are not as comfortable and the quality is a lot lower. Mind you that my almost 5 year old parachute sheets are STILL THRIVING. Living in Dallas I changed the sheets weekly, but in LA I do it every two weeks just to save money. We have to pay $1.75 for every wash cycle and $1.50 for every dry cycle. I wanted to mention that as well, as the semi-frequent washing didn’t help the sheet’s case either. After those sheets (which we are still alternating sleeping on btw), I vowed to never skimp on sheets again. Here’s why:
Reasons to invest in good sheets
Everyday use. Save for good quality, because you will literally use these every night. Investing in good quality sheets will save you more in the long run.
Better sleep. If your sheets are more breathable, softer, etc, chances are you will sleep better. Keep in mind natural fibers keep your body regulated better than synthetic! I touched on this topic here re: pajamas. We didn’t have air conditioning for a year and I learned how bad sleep can get if you don’t have the right conditions. This might seem okay for LA, but the sun hit our door just right and our apartment would head up to 85+ degrees!
Healthier. Did you know that conventional dyes have more than 8000 toxic chemicals? Choosing to buy organic cotton is not only better for your skin and health, but it is also better for the factory workers and the world regarding pollution and such. You literally are with your sheets for 8+/- hours a day, 365 days a year, so I’d say this is a more important organic shift than others like towels or even clothes.
Extra tip: Buy two sets of sheets! My mom taught me this. It makes it easier to change the sheets as you don’t have to wait on the other set to be cleaned! When I purchased the cheaper organic sheets, I only bought one to save money. This was a mistake because they were poor quality and just wore even more, though I only washed them every other week. Buying two sets also makes them last longer, as they have less use!
The issue with the above? Good sheets are expensive. I realized I wanted to buy new sheets back in May, but we had some extra expenses and I finally pulled the trigger last month due to the Black Friday Sales. The Brooklinen Classic Core Sheets were 20% off and I jumped at it. With the discount, along with taxes and everything, our total was $148.04 versus $169 + taxes and fees. To be 100% truthful, I went with Brooklinen because of price. That’s actually part of the reason they created their business… to make quality products more accessible. I love my Parachute sateen sheets, but just didn’t want to spend that much right now. I wanted to buy good quality sheets that were comfy, but also were OEKO-TEX® certified for chemical safety. Before deciding on Brooklinen, I also looked at Parachute, Boll and Branch, Under the Canopy, Hoot, and Coyuchi. They all have good products at different price points, but I had heard a lot of good things bout Brooklinen, so I decided to try them out.
Price comparison
Because price is what caused me to buy, I wanted to share the difference between Parachute and Brooklinen. The prices below are all for California King sheets, as that is what we have. All other sizes are obviously cheaper! I also wanted to touch on the different kinds sheets. My Parachute sheets are sateen, but my Brooklinen ones are percale. They both offer sateen and percale, in addition to linen. I figure you know what linen is, but do you know the difference between sateen and percale? Compare sateen to silk due to the weave of the cotton. This makes it super soft and very luxurious. It is more expensive. Percale is a more tightly woven weave - think of it as a nice dress shirt. It isn’t as soft as sateen, but it is still nice and very breathable.

So what do I think of my Brooklinen sheets?
They are great! I really like them and would recommend them. They are lightweight, crisp in a good way, and very comfortable to sleep in temperature wise. They also have gotten softer after each wash. If I had to pick between my Parachute sateen and my Brooklinen percale, I think I would pick my Parachute sateen, BUT that isn’t a fair comparison because they aren’t the same… the two sateen (luxe) sheets would be the fair comparison. I’m just glad that I was able to find good quality sheets for less, so thanks Brooklinen! The Parachute percale version of the ones I have are $100 more, which is a pretty steep difference. The sateens have a $90 difference, so pretty much the same price variation as the percale. I could have purchased the Brooklinen sateen sheets and still saved money compared to Parachute, but that was still more than I wanted to spend at the time. Maybe when we retire the cheaper sheet set we have been sleeping on ;)
Just for reference, the cheaper organic sheets I bought last year were 300 thread count only $56. They are a lot more scratchy than my Brooklinen Classic Core Sheet Set - I’m thinking it is because they didn’t use long staple cotton. I guess Parachute is right when they say that thread count doesn’t matter! The sheets also haven’t gotten softer, but have gotten more scratchy and more dingy. Only time will tell on these Brooklinen sheets if they will hold up as long as our Parachute sheets, but I suspect that they will!!
Have you tried Brooklinen before? What do you think? Have any other organic sheet brands that you like? The next thing I plan on switching out are my towels. They currently aren’t organic and I would love to make the switch there!! I plan on sharing those findings too. Currently trying to find bath sheets that won’t eat up my entire budget. Hah! Sleep well!! XOXO
